Cast iron is one of the best cookware you can own, but it requires allowable care. If you have found your cast iron turned to rust in the cupboard, do not throw it away. Instead, restore it to good as new condition. The steps are quick and easy.
Most cast iron that has rusted just needs to have a good cleaning in a sink of nice soapy water. The quickest way to clean the pan of rust is using steel wool. It is fine adequate to get most of the rust out of the cast iron pores. Once you have scrubbed the rust away, rinse the pan and immediately dry it. The pan is now ready for seasoning before usage.
Sandpaper
Should you have a cast iron pan that has turned to thick rust; you will need to use sand paper to take off it. A fine grade of sandpaper should work. After taking off the bulk of the rust, wash the pan in hot soapy water. Once again, use the steel wool as the final scrubbing method. Rinse the pan, dry it and season well.
Seasoning is as simple as placing the pan in the oven. Turn the heat to 400 degrees and wait for the pan to reach that temperature. Turn the oven off and take off the pan. Cast iron breathes and this step will open the pores. Once it is cool adequate to handle, take a cotton fabric and very lightly coat the pan with oil or lard. Place the pan back in the oven. Set the climatic characteristic to 400 degrees. Once it reaches that temperature, turn the oven off and walk away. The pan should cool inside the oven gradually so the seasoning locks into the pores of the pan.
Your cast iron will continue to be one of your best pieces of cookware for years to come if you keep it dry and rust free. When storing your pans you should store them without covers and with a paper towel in each pan.
